A GWYNEDD rugby league star is “over the moon” to have been selected for Wales’ Under-19 squad for the European Championships in September.

Rob Muirhead, who plays for Llangefni Rugby Club and Marchogion Môn Knights, has been picked for the Wales squad for this year’s U-19 European Championship, which was won by France last year.

Mr Muirhead, from Pwllheli, is also a former RGC Under-18s player, which helped bring him to St David’s College in Llandudno.

He joined the school after getting to know Director of Sport Dan Lycett, who was a coach with RGC at the time.

“He has shown phenomenal resilience to seek out and follow this route,” said Mr Lycett.

“His physical characteristics and strength make him a great candidate for the 13-man game.”

Rob is now studying engineering at Bangor University and scored a hattrick of tries and was awarded Man of the Match in just his first game.

Mr Muirhead said: “I am over the moon to be selected to play for Wales.

“Ever since I was little it has always been a dream to play for my country, so when I was told I was part of the squad I was so chuffed and excited."
