AN 84-year-old Deiniolen woman has been honoured for going “above and beyond” the call of duty to help fellow pensioners.

Jenny Wlliams is a volunteer at the Age UK’s Age Cymru charity shop, on Bangor High Street.

She was selected from 6,500 nominations nationwide to receive the Age UK’s Spirit of Age ‘Retail Award’ 2017.

Jenny has been at shop for the past 18 years, she works four days a week and travels 10 miles each day by bus to give her time to helping people in later life.

She was invited to a star-studded event held in London to collect her award, but was unable to attend.

Her daughter, Jean Williams picked up the accolade on her behalf from television personality and impressionist Jon Culshaw.

Jenny said: “I come here rain or shine, I love it, I love helping people and meeting and chatting with everyone. It is rewarding to be able help other people and it keeps me active and busy too. I am also well known round here for bringing in my home made toffee.”

Her award celebrates an Age UK Shop volunteer who has gone above and beyond to support the shop, their team, customers and fellow volunteers.

Lana Davey, charity shop manager, said: “Jenny is always so positive and helps to motivate the whole team.

”She goes above and beyond the call of duty, and she is full of fun and laughter, she’s a real hit with the customers.

”She is also a pillar in her community. She is an absolute inspiration to us all, she truly deserves to get the award. We are all thrilled for her, and want to thank her very much for all that she does.”

Lydia Curran, head of events at Age UK, said: “The Spirit of Age awards are all about celebrating the work of the incredible people.”
