HSBC is closing two of its branches on Anglesey.

The island's MP Albert Owen has called on the bank to reconsider its decision to close its Amlwch and Menai Bridge branches on April 8.

The decision will leave customers in Amlwch with a thirteen mile trip to Llangefni to visit their nearest branch whilst Menai Bridge customers will need to cross the Strait to Bangor.

Customers will also be encouraged to use internet and telephone banking and to use services at local Post Offices.

Mr Owen said: "HSBC used to market itself as the world’s local bank.

"It certainly isn’t anymore.

"Customers in Amlwch and Menai Bridge will be distressed to hear that their branches are closing and that they will have to travel some distance to visit their bank.

"These are big for Island’s towns and the public face of the High Street Banks.

“While I am glad that there will be no job losses, I do feel for customers who may not have easy access to the internet, a recurring problem on the Island, or who may not feel comfortable doing their private banking down a telephone line.

"The customer experience will be considerably poorer as a result of this decision.

“I have voiced my disappointment with HSBC in the past and have urged them to reconsider this decision for the good of the communities of both Amlwch and Menai Bridge.

"I urge customers of both branches to object to this decision as this is just more centralisation of services.”

A HSBC spokesperson said: "We never take the decision to close a branch lightly, and we understand it's unsettling for the local community.

"Unfortunately, with an increase in the use of online and telephone banking over the past few years use of the Menai Bridge and Amlwch branches have fallen significantly, and we've taken the difficult decision to close them on 8 April.

"We have been working with customers who use the branch to help them understand their options, which include being able to use the local post office for their day-to-day banking.

"There are also free ATMs in the area."
