TEAM Ynys Môn returned home from the 2015 Island Games in Jersey with a big haul of medals. 

Anglesey's 151-strong contingent made the long journey home last weekend having won a total of five gold and five bronze medals.

Iolo Hughes got the ball rolling on the second day of competition, with a bronze medal in the 5,000m race. 

Anglesey’s track and field stars continued their momentum into the next day, as Mikaela Harrison sealed a bronze medal in the 400m and Connor Laverty earned himself a bronze in the mens discus. 

Môn’s fourth bronze came courtesy of shooting pair Catriona Duffy and Sioned Jones, who came third in the English Sporting Team competition. 

Then came Team Môn’s Thrilling Thursday, as they bagged themselves four gold medals in just one day. 

Having dominated the team competition throughout the week, Môn’s sailors sealed first place when unsuitable weather cut the competition short. 

The team, featuring Dominic Breen-Turner, Eifion Mon, Michael Thorne and Benjamin Todd eventually took first place by a huge margin of 48 points, from second-placed Aland. 

Earning himself a comfortable victory in the Laser Standard Rig competition was Eifion Mon, who came first in the by a 10-point margin. 

Benjamin Todd earned the team’s third gold medal on the water in the Laser Radial Rig classification, in a remarkable triumph which saw him recover from last place after the first race, to win by a solitary point. 

Capping a memorable day for Môn was athlete Mikaela Harrison, who won her second medal and first gold with her first place in the 400m hurdles by a mere 0.10 seconds. 

On the final day of action, Duffy and Jones won their second bronze medals of the games after finishing third in the sport trap team. 

Saving his best until last for Team Anglesey was Iolo Hughes, who recorded victory in the 1,500m to win the island’s fifth gold medal and tenth overall. 

Elsewhere, the island’s mens football finished in eighth position after a slender 1-0 defeat by Jersey in the 7th/8th play-off, while a 4-0 defeat against Greenland saw the ladies’ team finish tenth. 

A special mention must also go to Ynys Môn’s vocal supporters from Essex, brothers Pete, Richard and Rob Miller and their friend Dave Pearson, who made up the Mersea to Jersey group, and passionately cheered on Anglesey’s athletes throughout the week.
