THE new mayor of Bangor has assumed the chain of office.

Cllr Jean Forsyth, who was installed at Bangor City Council’s Annual General Meeting, said it was an honour to have the opportunity serve as mayor for a second time.

She added: “I promise to do my utmost to promote Bangor as a worthwhile city to live, work and invest in.”

Cllr Forsyth, who also represents Hirael ward on Gwynedd Council, joined the city council in 2004 and previously served as mayor in 2009/10.

She served and deputy to outgoing mayor Douglas Madge in 2013/14 and, at the AGM, he thanked cllr Forsyth for her efforts.

The new mayor will serve alongside her deputy, cllr Eve Butler.

Cllr Madge, who suffered a heart attack in February, also thanked his wife Doreen for her support.

The outgoing mayor reflected on his year in office, including Sebastian Coe’s visit to Bangor, the Welsh Guards’ freedom of the city parade and the Tree of Light, which illuminated Ffordd Gwynedd last Christmas.

Cllr Madge also paid tribute to the Trinity Foundation for its work with Japanese students, and to the Military Preparation College.
