Decision on Bangor TV "overdue"

A TV station for Bangor could be given the green light in a “matter of days”.

Bay TV’s application for a community television service in the city and the surrounding area is currently awaiting approval by broadcast regulator OFCOM.

Bay TV Chief Executive Chris Johnson said: “A decision on the application is overdue.

"It could be in the next few days.”

Mr Johnson conceded that the decision process will take as long as it takes, but that they are expecting a decision “at any minute”.

The Liverpool company’s applications for TV services in Swansea and Wrexham were apporoved by OFCOM last week.

Mr Johson added: “Without being complacent, we are optimisic.

“We think we have the right formula for Bangor, and with the success of our application in Mold and Swansea, where we weren’t the only company applying for licence, we are quietly confident.”

OFCOM has awarded 25 local TV licences since the UK Government made it possible for them to do so last year.

In 2011, the city was named among a list of sites eligible for a local TV station by the Government’s Department of Culture, Media and Sport

The Bay TV service, if it is approved, will employ eight to ten staff, and have strong links with the university.

The station could carry up to 30 minutes of Welsh language broadcasts per week, cover live events in the area and hold political debates.

Bay TV Gwynedd states in its bid: “The character of our service will be the key to its survival and success.

"Central to its character are lively coverage of news, sport and local life.

“The area will benefit from a TV station on which the local coverage is relevant to the audience it serves.

“Bay TV Gwynedd will not only feature news from the Bangor and Anglesey area in its bulletins, but will also stimulate debate and encourage local residents to engage in a dialogue on political and civic issues that affect them, their families and their communities.”
