A CAERNARFON family has been reunited with its beloved pet after he disappeared 10 months ago.

Four-year-old retriever Tommy went missing on Trefor beach in April last year leaving owners Ian Griffiths, 57, and wife Julie, 56, devastated.

Tommy was found on Pensarn beach more than 35 miles away in January and was taken to a rescue centre in nearby Prestatyn.

She said: "We are thrilled to have him back.

"When he was missing we tried to keep him fresh in people's minds, but as the months went on my hope of getting him back was getting less and less.

"Tommy was a bit of a Houdini, he would disappear quite often, but he always came back."

Julie believes he may have been picked up from the beach by someone who took a shine to him.

She said: "There were a lot of people an vans on the beach that day and we think someone may have picked him up, which is wrong because he had a collar on.

"He is a nice looking dog."

Carol Roberts, manager of the Abandoned Animals Association in Prestatyn, said: “Tommy was found on Pensarn beach and brought to the rescue centre.

"It was very odd how he ended up there.”

Although scruffy and dirty when he was found, Tommy appeared to have been well looked after and Carol contacted Lost Dogs North Wales.

They asked the owners to get in touch and the centre had a visit from Ian and Julie and it was immediately clear that he was their missing dog.

Ian and Julie had only recently updated their entry on Lost Dogs North Wales and without that later entry they would have never recovered him.

After Tommy went missing the couple other dog, chocolate Labrador Monty was missing him so much, they adopted a third dog, Whisper from an animal shelter.

Julie said she is now taking more precautions with their dogs and all three have now been chipped.

She said: "Our pets are like part of the family.

"I would urge other dog owners to be vigilant.

"There are so many dogs being taken, something needs to be done. I hope that the police will start getting involved."
