"Miracle" baby girl for Amlwch couple

AN ANGLESEY woman has defied overwhelming odds to give birth to a "miracle" little girl.

Jess Davies and Shaun Thomas, both aged 24, from Amlwch, celebrated the birth of daughter Harper Lily Thomas, on January 2.

Just three years earlier, the prospect seemed an impossibility to the couple, after Jess received surgery to remove a benign brain tumour.

Shaun Thomas said: “The consultant said when Jess was being induced, that this could be our only chance for a baby, so she certainly is a miracle.”

During the operation to remove Jess’ tumour, her pituitary gland - which produces vital hormones for the body, including fertility hormones - was damaged.

Jess recovered fully from the procedure, but she and boyfriend Shaun Thomas, also 24, had resigned themselves to be unable to conceive in the future.

However, last May, the couple's lives took a dramatic twist, when Jess discovered that she had fallen pregnant.

Shaun said: "It was a massive, massive shock. Obviously Jess found out when she did the test and waited for me to come home, and I was so shocked I decided to get on my bike for 10 miles.

"It was a happy shock, I was overjoyed.

"It was a high risk pregnancy. We had to be monitored a lot more than normal pregnancies, so that's why we had to go to Glan Clwyd, in case there were complications.”

With the due date on January 14, the couple enjoyed a quiet Christmas, before Jess was rushed to Ysbyty Glan Clwyd on New Year's Eve, where it was decided she would have to be induced two weeks early.

Two days later, Harper was welcomed into the world, weighing 7lb 8oz - but things were not as straightforward as the couple had first thought.

Shaun said: "We were both obviously over the moon. We were glad everything was ok, and Jess was exhausted but overjoyed.

"But Harper had an infection so she had to go in the special care baby unit. We had what we thought was a perfectly well baby, but we weren’t allowed to take her home until the antibiotics were finished.”

The parents waited at Ty Croeso, accommodation for parents with babies in the special care baby unit, until January 10, when the family finally returned to their Amlwch home with their new addition.

Shaun added: “It was a great feeling to get them both home. It was just a light at the end of the tunnel and a massive relief.

“We didn't think this was going to happen to us, not naturally anyway, so we were both over the moon.”
