Tributes paid to Anglesey and Gwynedd football stalwart

TRIBUTES have been paid to an Anglesey and Gwynedd football stalwart who died last weekend.

John ‘Rock’ Roberts, of Pencraig, Llangefni, who was the secretary of the Gwynedd Football League, died peacefully at Ysbyty Glan Clwyd on Saturday after a long battle with illness.

Mr Roberts was a long-serving member of Llangefni Town Football Club, and had also previously served as secretary to the Anglesey Football League.

Denis Bryant, Chairman of the Anglesey Football League, said: “It is with great sadness that John Roberts or better known to everyone as John Rock of Llangefni, has passed away.

“John was in his second spell as the Gwynedd League Secretary, and he had also been secretary of the Anglesey League for many years and was in involved when I first became Chairman many years ago.

“He was a great help to me at that time in learning the ropes and for guidance, he was always willing to help anyone any time.

“John will not only be sadly missed by the leagues and club that I have mentioned but by Welsh football in general.

“Condolences on behalf of everyone involved with the Anglesey Football League go out to John's family at this sad and difficult time.”

Gareth Davies, press officer for Holyhead Hotspur FC, said: ”John was a smashing fellow.

“He was very kind and helpful and always good to talk to. He was well-liked, popular and dedicated to what he did.”

“This is a great loss to the Gwynedd League and to football in North Wales.”

The funeral will be held in Llangefni on Tuesday, February 11 at 11am followed by cremation at Bangor at 1.30pm.
