Holyhead wins £7.5 million regeneration bid

HOLYHEAD is to receive a £7.5 million cash injection after a bid to regenerate the town centre was approved by the Welsh Government.

Last week, the Minister for Housing and Regeneration, Carl Sargeant, announced the town was among 11 towns and cities across Wales which will be allocated funding from the Government’s regeneration grant, Vibrant and Viable Places (VVP).

The successful Anglesey Council-led bid - Holyhead: Realising Sustainable Community Benefit - aims to improve the town centre, as the town braces for a number of major developements over the next five years.

Among the improvements which could be carried out is the renovation of the town centre Market Hall.

Anglesey Council Leader, cllr Ieuan Williams, said: "This is great news for Holyhead. We’re delighted that the Welsh Government has approved the funding bid, which was led by the County Council’s Economic Development Unit.

"The bid obviously made a significant impression on the Minister despite facing tough competition from other authorities across Wales.

“We now look forward to entering into further talks with the Welsh Government and agreeing a robust funding programme, to be approved by the Minister, which will provide a huge boost to regeneration the town of Holyhead.”

Economic Development portfolio holder, Cllr Aled Morris Jones, said: "Several large-scale developments are being considered in and near to Holyhead.

"It is vital that those create real benefits and jobs for local people, and have an on-going legacy of prosperity and quality of life for local communities.

"Maximising such benefits was therefore a key part of our bid.”
Holyhead Town council clerk Cliff Everett said he hoped to see some of the VVP money contributed towards the town council's bid to purchase the Empire Cinema outright.

He added: "This is something that the town council has supported and we're made up that it's had the green light.

"We're now hoping it can help create more jobs in Holyhead."
