Workers face deportation

ILLEGAL immigrants were found to be working at an Indian restaurant during an inspection last week.

Zeera Indian restaurant on Temple Street, Llandrindod Wells was raided by Home Office immigration officers on Saturday.

They found three illegal immigrants which leaves the restaurant facing a potential fine of £30,000.

Three Bangladeshi men, one aged 28 and two aged 24, were arrested at the property for overstaying their visas.

The two younger men are now in Home Office detention while steps are taken to remove them from the country.

The 28-year-old was temporarily released and must report to the Home Office while his case is considered. If it is found that he has no right to be in the country he will also be deported.

Acting on intelligence, officers visited the premises and individuals present were questioned to check if they had the right to be in the UK.

The Zeera Indian restaurant was served a notice warning that it faces civil penalties of up to £10,000 per illegal worker employed, amounting to a potential penalty of £30,000.

The penalties will be imposed unless proof is provided by the employers that the correct right-to-work checks were carried out.

At time of print the Zeera Indian restaurant failed to comment.

Richard Johnson, from the Wales Home Office immigration enforcement team, said: “The message to employers in Wales who choose to use illegal labour is clear. We will catch you and you will face a heavy penalty.

“Illegal working has a negative impact on communities. It defrauds the taxpayer, undercuts honest employers and cheats legitimate job seekers out of employment opportunities.

“I would urge members of the public with information about suspected immigration abuse to get in touch.”

Employers unsure of the steps they need to take to avoid employing illegal workers can visit or they can call the employers helpline on 0300 123 4699.
