Beaumaris day care centre unlikely to re-open, councillors told

COMMUNITY leaders in Beaumaris have been warned that the prospect of an elderly day care centre re-opening is unlikely.

Members of Beaumaris Town Council have been campaigning to re-open Maes Hyfryd day care centre ever since its doors were closed year ago, when Anglesey County Council deemed the building unfit for purpose.

But in a heated recent public meeting hosted by Beaumaris council, Llangoed and Penmon Community Council, Pentraeth Community Council and county councillors of Seiriol ward, members were warned by Anglesey council director of social services, Gwen Carrington, that the likelihood of Maes Hyfryd re-opening was slim.

She said the decision to close the centre was taken last year by commissioners running the county council, citing a figure of £100,000 which would need to be spent on repairing the roof.

Gwen Carrington said: "We want the best service for the people in this area. What we had was people with different needs, people who needed care and some people who needed a chat.

"We're in a very, very difficult situation to consider opening another centre on Anglesey.

"We can't go back to what we had, and there is worse to come.

"What I can give absolute commitment to is how we work with you as a community about how we plan for that provision in the future.

Beaumaris Cllr Jason Zalot said: "The kitchen in was better in standard than some of the hotels in this town. There was a lovely dining area, hairdressing unit, disabled toilets.”

Cllr Zalot also disputed the figure quoted to repair the roof, believing it to be in the region of £60,000.

Cllr Stan Zalot said: "With the greatest respect in the world, I feel that we've been hoodwinked here. And the next thing is that it will be put up for sale - well that's not good enough for the people in Beaumaris I'm afraid.

"Don't think that this place is shut, because it isn't. We'll have an army coming up against you. This place will have to be re-opened."
