Bus stops smashed as estate vandals strike

Geraint Jones

VANDALS have been condemned for smashing glass at two bus stations and daubing foul slogans on the wall of a community centre on a Bangor council estate.

Horrified Gwynedd councillor Christopher O’Neal said youngsters were responsible for the damage at Ty Cegin on Penrhyn Avenue, Maesgeirchen and at bus stations near the estate’s chip shop and Chinese takeaway.

The yobs also daubed on one of the bus stations obscene slogans about a police officer who patrols the estate.

Cllr O’Neal said: “The residents are not happy about what’s going on - it’s soul destroying for us as a community.

“I was one of the first people to moan about a curfew order on the youth of the city by the police and Gwynedd Council, but if youths are going to act like this on the estate then the community needs to stand up and be counted and let’s get the police taking robust action against them.”

Cllr O’Neal added that there were fewer activities on the site for young people after the Welsh Government stopped funded the Ty Cegin centre, resulting in redundancies over the last month.

He said the damage would cost hundreds of pounds to repair, and called on parents to take responsibility for their children’s whereabouts and actions.

Cllr O’Neal said: “We have worked hard here to get the reputation of Maesgeirchen changed from how it was years ago and I along with others will stand up against those who are willing to cause misery and bring them to justice for there actions.”

A North Wales Police spokesman said the vandalism at Ty Cegin had resolved by restorative resolution.

The spokesman added that inquiries into the two bus stops being smashed were underway, and added: “CCTV is being studied as part of the investigation and inquiries have also been made in the local area.”
