Beaumaris day care centre site in the balance

THE fate of the land which housed a day care centre in Beaumaris is hanging in the balance.

The plot in Maes Hyfryd is under the ownership of Anglesey County Council and discussions have now begun as to how the land may be used after the day centre was closed in July as “unfit for purpose”.

Members of Beaumaris Town Council have made it clear they would prefer for the day care centre to be re-instated, but members have shown concerns that it may be sold to a developer.

Anglesey council housing enabler Mary Sillitoe has conducted surveys on how the land could be used to develop affordable housing, which is seen as a second-best option by town councillors.

Mayor Cllr Jason Zalot said: “We said that we’d fight tooth and nail for the day care centre and we will carry on fighting tooth and nail for it. We don’t want Anglesey council to go and give this away to the highest bidder. The older people feel badly let down by the council.

“If we fail in our fight, it should be used for local needs housing. But we will not go down without a fight.”

“The school children used to visit the elderly people, and they loved it. But now it’s gone, it’s just killing the community.”

Cllr Ian Davies said: “The nails are still fresh on the boards over the windows and someone’s talking about developing social housing on the site.

“It’s not right that it’s being discussed so quickly, and straight away we’re asking her [Mary Silitoe] to come in to talk about social housing. It seems that we’re like vultures picking it off.”

Mike Barton, head of property at the Isle of Anglesey County Council said, "We are currently exploring options for Maes Hyfryd Day Care Centre.

“As part of a wholescale review of the Council's property assets, a Corporate Property and ICT Asset Management Plan will be considered by the Full Council, and will offer the authority a way forward in terms of our approach to property assets."

The day care centre will be discussed in a corporate property council meeting today at the Llangefni council offices at 2pm.
