A 37-year-old Holyhead man who appeared in court with bloodied cheeks and a bandaged wrist was jailed for eleven weeks at a special weekend hearing.

Darren Owen, of Market Street, pleaded guilty to stealing spirits altogether worth £150 from Asda in the town on Thursday and Friday, resisting two PCs, and causing £200 damage to the glasses of one of them.

Angela Narey, prosecuting, said Owen had to be rugby tackled to the ground "and unfortunately everyone was injured."

Owen had convictions for 67 previous offences, most of them theft related.

Andrew Scott, defending, said Owen had not realised at first that the two PCS were officers because they were in plain clothes.

"Drugs are the underlying issue, he has stolen to obtain money to buy heroin," he explained to magistrates at Llandudno.

He had recently been released from prison but had now been sent back there by the probation service.

The court was told he owed £4,270 in fines and costs. Costs of £115 were imposed, but no further compensation or costs because of the jail sentence.
