A LORRY which has been stuck under a bridge on Anglesey for over a day has forced a road to close "until further notice."

The vehicle became wedged under the railway bridge on Ffordd Glanhwfa, Llangefni, at around 3pm yesterday.

Due to bad weather on the island today, Network Rail are having to delay a possible move to lift the bridge deck out using a crane, which means that the road could be closed "until next week".

The HGV Vehicle was carrying a oversized load and the driver had attempted to squeeze it underneath the bridge before it became trapped halfway through which in turn blocked the road.

A spokesperson for Anglesey Council said: "Ffordd Glanhwfa will remain closed to vehicles and pedestrians until further notice. Network Rail staff are at the scene to assess the situation."

Police closed the road at around 4.30pm yesterday, warning motorists to avoid the area.

Highways staff from Anglesey Council also attended the scene and despite the railway line on the bridge being disused, Network Rail have confirmed they'll have to act, due to the significant damage caused.

A spokesperson for Network Rail said: "Following a bridge strike reported at Llangefni yesterday, our teams are working hard to re-open the road for next week.

"We advise drivers to check the height of their vehicles before approaching bridges."
