AS STORM Callum hit north Wales, high winds and torrential rain battered Anglesey, Gwynedd and Snowdonia.

Winds were reported to have hit 72mph (116km) at Capel Curig and the North Wales Police control room has received numerous calls concerning fallen trees, branches and standing water across the region.

The Met Office had issued a Amber Warning for rain for Wales which is in force between 6am on Friday, October 12 and 11.59pm on Saturday, October 13.

Now there are further warnings of heavy and persistent rainfall on Saturday, with further flooding possible.

On the A55 Britannia Bridge, one lane has been closed in each direction due to the high winds predicted.

Hundreds of homes were also left without power and there is travel disruption across Wales.

There are concerns that homes and businesses could be flooded, causing damage to some buildings

and there is a chance of power cuts and loss of other services to some homes and businesses

North Wales police tweeted on today, Friday morning: "Our Control Room are busy this morning after receiving several weather-related calls, in particular across Anglesey and Gwynedd.

"Reports of standing water, fallen trees & branches. Please allow extra time for your journey if heading out today and #staysafe #StormCallum."

A spokesperson for the national weather service said: "As Storm Callum passes to the northwest of the UK, a period of heavy rain will affect South Wales during Friday, with further spells of persistent and heavy rain at times during Saturday.

"Rainfall totals will reach 40-80 mm widely with 120-160 mm likely over the high ground exposed to the South and South West. The rain is expected to be accompanied by strong winds, which when combined with high tides may lead to some coastal impacts due to large waves."

Natural Resources Wales is asking people to be alert for flooding as heavy rain is expected. A spokesperson said people are advised to take extra care and allow extra time for their journey as driving conditions may be "hazardous".

Ferries and trains have already been cancelled due to the conditions and police are warning that there could be some difficult driving conditions.
