ANGLESEY is set to have new state of the art leisure facilities to help inspire and enable residents of all ages to keep fit and healthy.

Work on upgrading the fitness room at Holyhead Leisure Centre started on Wednesday.

Gym-goers have been told about a short closure period, but will enjoy brand new equipment when the fitness room reopens on Sunday, September 30.

Improvements are being made as part of the major new capital investment scheme will include a modern Cardio and strength kit, dedicated functional area, and an inclusive fitness room accessible to all.

During the closure, direct debit members will be able to use other fitness rooms at Amlwch, David Hughes and Plas Arthur Leisure Centre.

Commercial leisure manager Gerallt Roberts said: “Much of the equipment at both Plas Arthur and Amlwch Leisure Centres has been upgraded in recent years and this has led to greater participation levels and income. The equipment currently used at Holyhead Leisure Centre is, on average, around 10 years old.”

He added, “We’d like to apologise to our customers for this brief inconvenience but I’m sure they’ll agree it will be worth it with major investment in new facilities and equipment. We’d like to thank them for their support and look forward to welcoming them back when we reopen.”

It is estimated that the upgrade of the equipment in Holyhead will bring in around 175 new members. The extra income generated and a reduction in equipment servicing charges will cover the cost of the initial £200,000 capital investment over the next few years.

Leisure portfolio holder Councillor Carwyn Jones, said: “Exercising and keeping fit is so important if we are to enjoy long term health benefits and live life to the full.”

“Finances in local government are tight, and so we’re using a sensible, and cost effective, way to invest in our leisure facilities. Whilst the Holyhead Leisure Centre building has seen better days, inside we’re providing facilities to inspire and enable residents of all ages and abilities to stay healthy.”

As an extra ‘thank you’ direct debit members will also be entitled to claim three free fitness class passes from reception.

Members of the island's Full Council supported two major capital schemes – the Holyhead fitness room upgrade and new 3G pitch in Llangefni - as part of the 2018/19 budget.
