IT IS planned to open the Welsh Highland Railway’s £2.3 million new terminus at Caernarfon for Christmas Santa Special trains.

It was originally planned to open the station this summer, but a problem with a mains gas pipeline caused a 14 week delay.

A spokesman for the railway said: “We now anticipate officially opening the station next year, but the first passenger carrying trains to use the new station will be our traditional Santa Specials at Christmas.”

The new station will help to increase visitor numbers to the Welsh Highland by an estimated 5,000 visitors per annum.

It is expected these extra visitors will provide the additional benefits including two full-time jobs, £750,000 of additional spending in the local economy which in turn will bring 19 additional indirect jobs and safeguard 152 jobs locally.
