KAYAK incidents meant that the Moelfre inshore lifeboat was launched twice in the matter of hours yesterday.

The first call saw the Moelfre inshore lifeboat (ILB) launched shortly after 11am when a kayak was reported to be drifting 200 metres off Traeth Bychan.

Station personnel located the kayak drifting rapidly offshore and ascertained that two people were in the water with the kayak.

The lifeboat was launched and on scene within minutes, finding a young girl around the age of five and her father clinging to the upturned kayak drifting offshore in 35-knot winds

Medical assistance was requested immediately as both were suffering from the effects of cold water immersion and ingesting sea water.

Once on the beach, the pair were treated accordingly with the assistance of the Moelfre Coastguard team and Red Wharf Bay sailing club.

The sailing club safety boat also assisted by recovering the kayak while the crew administered first aid.

The pair were handed to the care of North Wales Ambulance Service.

The ILB returned to station at approximately 12pm.

Later, the lifeboat crew at the station observed two kayaks off the lifeboat station struggling in the adverse weather conditions just after 2pm.

As the station was contacting the Coastguard, one of the pair capsized approximately 500 metres offshore.

The ILB launched immediately and quickly found the kayakers, who had made it ashore at Moelfre Island.

The ILB crew got the two teenage boys aboard and transported them back to Traeth Bychan and the awaiting Moelfre Coastguard Team. The ILB then went back to the island and recovered the kayak to the lifeboat station.
