THE Beaumaris lifeboat went to the aid of two young swimmers yesterday afternoon.

The boys, who were wearing wetsuits, had apparently got into difficulty in the sea off Church Island by Menai Bridge.

The Beaumaris Atlantic 85 made its way to Menai Bridge, with the Penmon mobile coastguard rescue team and North Wales Police both also involved in the operation.

Fortunately, the boys managed to reach the shore unaided being met by the coastguard and police.

Once it was established that all was well with the youngsters the lifeboat was release to return to station by 3.15pm.

Earlier, the Holyhead coastguard requested the launch of the lifeboat to assist a motor fishing vessel, the 10.5-metre Conwy-based Nicola Faith, by Puffin Island.

The call came at 1.08pm and the Beaumaris inshore lifeboat Annette Mary Liddington launched at 1.15pm.

The fishing vessel, located 2.5 miles north east of Puffin Island, had been unable to restart her engine.

It became apparent that the vessel would need to be towed into Conwy in view of the vessel's location and the state of the tide.

It was decided to request that the Llandudno all-weather lifeboat William F Yates also attend the incident.

Upon the arrival of the Llandudno lifeboat, the Beaumaris craft was called to the incident in the Menai Strait involving the young swimmers.

Once the tide was suitable, the Llandudno lifeboat towed the fishing boat to Conwy's Beacons jetty, returning to her station by 4.45 pm.
