A GWYNEDD MAN has been at the centre of a heated debate after he has been busy putting up the flags of each team that England play against in the 2018 World Cup outside his house.

Elis Anwyl from Bangor shot to social media fame when somebody spotted his Tunisia flag flying high above the A55.

As England progressed to the semi-finals, the flags of Panama, Belgium, Colombia, Sweden and Croatia have all been raised up the pole too.

22-year-old Elis says it all started out as a joke but it has ended up costing him far more than he intended it to.

"It's been a very expensive joke that's for sure, as I didn't expect England to get so far in the tournament," he said.

"I only came up with the idea as Wales weren't in the World Cup and I thought it would be a bit of harmless fun."

Elis, who is a former Coleg Meirion-Dwyfor student, says he has received a lot of heat on Facebook for posting the pictures of his flags.

"It seems I've created quite a stir with the posts," he said.

"At the end of the day it's all a bit of banter. I'm just gutted that France have now reached the final as if Belgium had reached it I could have re-used their flag again if England make it!"

Posts on social media regarding England's progress to the semi-final's of the World Cup in Russia have divided opinion throughout Wales with some opting to back the Three Lions and some very much supporting their opponents.
