PEOPLE are being asked for their views on Horizon Nuclear Power Wylfa Ltd’s permit applications by Natural Resources Wales

The applications are for three environmental permits and a marine licence, required to build and operate the proposed nuclear power station on Anglesey.

The consultation period has opened and runs until September 6, 2018.

NRW is holding three public drop-in sessions as part of the process and these are on:

Monday. July 16, 1pm-6.30pm at Storiel, Bangor, LL57 1DT

Tuesday, July 17, 1pm-6.30pm at David Hughes Hall, Cemaes, LL67 0LW

and Wednesday, July 18, 12.30pm-5pm at Ebeneser Centre, Llangefni, LL77 7PN

The environmental permit applications cover non-radioactive discharges to air, land and water. The marine licence application covers construction works and related activities at sea such as dredging.

Horizon’s application for a Radioactive Substances Regulation (RSR) permit was received in October 2017. Following a period of public consultation, the RSR permit application is still under consideration by NRW.

To be granted these permits, Horizon must demonstrate how it will manage and minimise any impacts on the environment and human health.

NRW says it will hold another period of public consultation once a draft decision has been reached for all the environmental permits.

If NRW believes the company could do more to protect the environment, or hasn’t provided enough information on how it plans to do so, it can refuse to issue a permit.

Tim Jones, NRW Executive Director of Operations for North Wales, said: “We will carry out a thorough assessment of Horizon’s proposals to see if they contain sufficient safeguards to protect people and the environment before deciding whether to issue the permits or refuse the application.

“We will consider all relevant information raised during the consultation and we would value hearing people’s views.”
