ROCK musician Mike Peters led a group of 400 people on a 12-mile fundraising walk through Snowdonia at the weekend.

The Alarm frontman, who has fought cancer three times since 1995, arranged his 11th charity walk in attempts to raise even more funds for various cancer organisations.

Mike, from Dyserth, set up the Love, Hope, Strength charity 11 years ago with the aim of "making a difference" to the lives of those affected by cancer.

He was joined on the walk by his wife, Jules, who has been successfully treated for breast cancer and sons Dylan and Evan as they followed the Nant Ffrancon Valley from Bethesda to Llyn Idwal.

The walk was followed by a second fundraiser, the highly-anticipated Zip World Rocks gig, which saw hundreds of people flock to Penrhyn Quarry to enjoy music by Mike, headliners Slade and several other acts who came to show their support for the event.

Mike said: "It was Jules’ idea to stage a concert with the magnificent quarry as a backdrop and its worked really well.

"Zip World have been magnificent and I hope that this can be the start of something that grows year on year."

Mike added that this year's walk, which was different to the usual annual walk up to the summit of Snowdon, had been more "intimate" and had given him the chance to talk to more people than usual.

"One of the walkers was undergoing chemotherapy just yesterday but was determined to be part of the walk today.” he said.

"We organise these events to help other families who have been affected by cancer and try to make a difference."

Mike, 59, was first diagnosed with lymphoma in 1995 and chronic lymphocytic leukaemia in 2005.

During his most recent battle with the disease, he has been given new drugs, meaning he is no longer required to undergo three-weekly chemotherapy sessions.

He said: "Life is good right now and it's all down to the NHS and I am very, very grateful to the nurses and doctors who have given me my life back."

Jules said: "We are both very grateful to the NHS in North Wales.

"We wanted to walk and talk and bring all of the elements of the community together and have fun and celebrate life."
