PUPILS from two Gwynedd primary schools have been successful in the final round of the Welsh Books Council’s national reading competition.

The event held in Aberystwyth saw the teams from Caernarfon's Ysgol Y Gelli and Pwllheli's Ysgol Edern perform a dramatic presentation of a book, along with discussing a short story that they had read.

Following the success in the county competition, Gelli’s year 3 and 4 team came second in the national competition and also won the award for the best group discussion of the novel, ‘Annalisa Swyn mewn trwbl.’

Ysgol Edern competed in the year 5 and 6 competition, where they were up against tough opponents for the main prize - the Dr Dewi Davies Shield.

However, it was the Edern pupils who scooped the top prize once again this year, having won it in 2017 too. They also won the prize for best group discussion about ‘Stori’r Brenin Arthur’ by Siân Lewis.

As part of the national rounds activities the children and teachers had the opportunity to enjoy sessions in the company of children’s laureate, Casia William.

Commenting on the pupils success, councillor Gareth Thomas, cabinet member for education said: “It’s a privilege to congratulate two Gwynedd schools for doing so well in this competition again this year.

"Reaching the final stages of any national competition is a fantastic achievement, and to come out on top is a feather in the cap for both pupils and teachers.

“It’s also great to see pupils benefitting so much from reading and discussing books, and to foster their communication skills by taking part in the competition."

Cllr Thomas also thanked the Council’s Library Services for their constant support with the competition.
