BEAUMARIS lifeboat volunteers responded to four 999 calls concerning a paddle boarder who was reluctant to be rescued.

The paddle boarder, who was spotted near Caernarfon, was believed to be in difficulties on Saturday.

As the Beaumaris RNLI lifeboat Annette Mary Liddington was being refurbished, the relief lifeboat Norma Ethel Vinall was launched at 4.30pm.

According to the Beaumaris RNLI, the paddle boarder initially declined assistance from the lifeboat.

A Beaumaris lifeboat spokesperson said in a statement: "The paddle boarder was not wearing a lifejacket and it transpired had no VHF radio.

"However, he declined any assistance from the lifeboat stating he was fine and it became apparent he was in fact very experienced with the paddle board.

"In view of the number of 999 calls received about him, the UK Coastguard requested the lifeboat crew request him to proceed to the shore which he initially declined to do. At the further instruction of the UK Coastguard the lifeboat crew again reiterated that he proceed to the shore.

"The casualty then proceeded to make his own way to the shore and was met by the Llandwrog Coastguard Rescue team."

The UK Coastguard then released the lifeboat so she could return to the station at Beaumaris.

The lifeboat arrived back at 5.35pm, was washed down, refuelled and prepared for her next service call by 6.05pm.
