FOUR schools will be given a stay of execution for another eight months due to delays involved with the construction of a new £5m “super school.”

Ysgol Santes Dwynwen was due to open in September 2018, but delays in its construction now mean that Ysgol Bodorgan, Ysgol Dwyran, Ysgol Llangaffo and Ysgol Niwbwrch will now stay open until April 2019.

The authority is blaming the delays on the process of buying the parcel of land in Newborough taking longer than expected, with further snags in obtaining planning permission not being sorted out until July 2017.

In addition, the ‘purdah’ period coinciding with the 2017 local and general elections are also being cited as delaying the process further.

In December, parents were informed that the opening date had been pushed back to January 2019, but the authority has now confirmed this has pushed back further.

The report that will be presented to Anglesey’s Executive when it meets on Monday, notes: ” The Authority has learned from its experiences when opening Ysgol Rhyd Y Llan that more time was needed between the builders finishing on site and staff moving into the new school.

Ysgol Santes Dwynwen will be a Community School and a Church in Wales School for 180 pupils and offering 25 nursery places.

A spokesman for the authority said: “Anglesey’s Education Service has now decided to delay opening the new school . This will ensure a smooth transition as they begin this exciting new chapter in their education.

“The Chairs of Governors at Ysgol Llangaffo, Bodorgan, Niwbwrch, Dwyran and Santes Dwynwen and all local county councillors have already been informed of the decision. “
