FILMING for a new Hollywood blockbuster starring Robert Downey Jr. took place on the Menai Bridge on Sunday.

Camera crews closed the bridge off for fifteen minute intervals as they shot scenes for the upcoming "The Voyage of Dr Dolittle" movie.

Universal Pictures are planning to release the film in April 2019 with Iron Man actor Downey Jr taking the title role.

Other stars such as Antonio Banderas, Michael Sheen, Emma Thompson and Ralph Fiennes will also star in the movie which is being directed by Stephen Gaghan.

It is believed that scenes being shot on the bridge over the weekend involve a character leaping from the bridge, as a giraffe runs over it, before landing on a steamer passing below on the Menai Strait.

The model giraffe used in the scene was spotted on the bridge on Sunday afternoon.

Motorists had to be diverted along the Britannia Bridge throughout the day as film crews took over the bridge and the nearby Antelope pub.

Downey Jr. himself wasn't spotted during filming, although he is rumoured to be in Wales at the moment.

He seemed to confirm this via a Twitter post in which he was standing in front of a Welsh flag before saying: "RDJ, coming at you from my Welsh command post."

One onlooker who spotted the cameras on the bridge said: "It had a very Hollywood type feel to it.

"There were cameras, plenty of people and even a helicopter flying over the bridge. It was surreal to say the least.
