MYNYDD TIGERS have become the first team from outside of Anglesey to win the Island's football division in nearly a century.

The club, managed by Mark Hughes, clinched the Kon-X Anglesey League title after a thrilling 4-2 win over Bryngwran Bulls on Saturday afternoon.

Bryngwran had won each of the five previous meetings between the two sides this season (including two cup finals) and needed just the one point to claim the title.

However, the youthful Mynydd side were clearly in high spirits going into the match which was held on the 3G pitch near Bangor City's Nantporth Stadium.

The underdogs took the lead after just eight minutes as Tomos Eames' smart free-kick caught Bulls keeper Gwynfor Williams off guard.

Their lead was then doubled twelve minutes later when Mike Holroyd got in behind the defence to fire home.

The game seemed to be all but over when talented midfielder Herbie Hofsteede put his side 3-0 up just after the half hour mark.

Bulls top scorer James Ryan missed a chance to pull one back for his side before half time when his penalty rattled against the bar.

In the second half, Richard Owen's side began to come to life and looked as though they could produce a surprising comeback.

Ryan made up for his spot kick error and bagged his 53rd goal of the campaign to give his side a glimmer of hope before substitute Barry Edwards reduced the deficit to one with a fine finish.

However, the lively Hofsteede bagged his second goal of the game at the very end to wrap the title up for Mynydd in their debut Anglesey League season.

Speaking after the match, a delighted Mark Hughes said: "Tigers manager Mark Hughes said: "It's been a long season full of lots of ups and downs but when it mattered we produced the goods.

"At 3-0 I thought it was game over but credit to The Bulls, they showed character to push us to the end.

"At one point I thought our numerous missed chances would come back to haunt us but thankfully we got over the line."

On Monday night, Arriva Bangor scooped their second piece of silverware of the season following an entertaining 6-4 win over Caergybi in the Benllech Car Boot Trophy final.

A hat-trick from the division's leading goalscorer Gary Jo Owen and a goal from his brother, Liam Williams, were not enough for Cybi to win this one.

Goals from Danial Ogwen Jones (2), Kieron Davies, Scott Hughes, Sammy Williams and Liam Roberts saw Kevin Jones' side take the prize in what has been a memorable debut Saturday League season for them.
