A WOMAN who had been walking alone in the Snowdonia mountains has been found dead.

The solo hiker, in her 40s, believed to be from the South Wales area, sustained serious injuries. She was alone on the mountain overnight.

She was found at the base of 1,000ft (300m) Snowdonia peak Glyder Fawr, in the Ogwen Valley, near Bethesda, at about 9am this morning.

The Ogwen Valley Mountain Rescue team, the RAF Valley Search and Rescue Team and the Coastguard helicopter from Caernarfon were all involved in the search.

A spokesperson for the North Wales Police said: "We can confirm that sadly a woman in her 40s was pronounced dead this morning following an incident below Glyder Fawr in Snowdonia.

"Formal identification has not taken place and her family have not yet been informed."
