A DRIVER was seriously injured after his car crashed into the Menai Strait.

The car, carrying only the driver, had crashed through nearby railings at Beach Road, Bangor, on Wednesday night before ending up in the Strait.

The coastguard, RNLI, police and paramedics were called to the scene and managed to recover the driver from the water before taking him to Ysbyty Gwynedd for treatment.

The driver suffered serious, but not life-changing or life-threatening injuries and the incident is currently under investigation by Police.

It is understood that no other vehicles were involved in the crash.

A spokesperson for Beaumaris lifeboat said it launched its Inshore Atlantic 85 Lifeboat Annette Mary Liddington just before 11pm to help with the rescue effort.

However, its services were not required as police and coastguard investigations confirmed there was no-one else in the water at Hirael Bay.

The vehicle involved has been recovered from the scene.

Anyone who witnessed the collision are asked to call North Wales Police on 101 quoting W032298.
