A 65-year-old man accused of a £20,900 benefit fraud after his then partner started work at a hospital received a six months suspended jail term.
Richard Hughes, of Bryngaer, Llanddaniel, Anglesey, must also obey a three-month overnight curfew.
Judge Rhys Rowlands told him at Caernarfon crown court: "You behaved in a thoroughly dishonest fashion and did so for some four to five years.”
Hughes admitted failing to notify the Department for Work and Pensions of a change in circumstances.
Elen Owen, defending, said the pensioner wasn’t dishonest from the outset and the offence had been against a background of very serious health issues.
There were no previous convictions and Hughes was repaying the cash at £29 a week.
