A NEW Mayor has been announced for Bangor at a Council meeting held this week.

Cllr. John Wynn Jones is set to take over from current Mayor Cllr. Derek Hainge within the next few weeks.

At a Bangor City Council meeting on Monday night, members voted unanimously for Mr Jones to take over the position.

He thanked his fellow Councillors for their support and said that he "looked forward to the challenge of helping the City grow".

Cllr. Jones, who is currently the Deputy Mayor of Bangor, has twice held the position of Mayor in the past having led the Council in both 1999-2000 and 2008-09.

At the meeting, Councillors also voted for John Wyn Williams to take over as Deputy Mayor.

He says although this announcement was "unexpected", he thanked members for showing faith in him and subsequently accepted the role.

It is expected that both Cllr. Jones and Cllr. Williams will begin their new positions on the Council from May onwards.
