BANGOR University's Athletic Union has revealed plans to install an all-weather 3G pitch at their sports facility at Treborth.

The University owned site, located next to the Menai Straits, currently features four full size football pitches, as well as two rugby fields, an eight lane athletics track and a pavilion.

Now, the team of students at the Athletic Union are looking to add a 3G pitch to that list to help clubs who have struggled with conditions on regular grass pitches.

Tatenda Shonhiwa, President for the Athletic Union, announced the plans this week but warned that they are subject to suitable tenders and planning permission.

"It is with great pleasure that I get to announce to the AU members and student body, that Bangor University will be going all out to tender for the installation of a 3G pitch at Treborth." he said.

"This has been made possible through representation from your Students Union, Athletic Union and colleagues in Sport at Bangor.

"All being well, we will have the new facility in 2018."

It is currently unclear as to whether or not the facility will be open to non-student clubs as well as University-based teams.

However, the possibility of local clubs being able to play fixtures in any weather on the pitch will come as great news for players and managers from the surrounding communities.

The re-arranging of cancelled league fixtures has been boosted since Bangor University jointly funded the development of the 3G pitch at Bangor City Football Club in 2014.

The venue has been used regularly by nearby clubs for hosting training sessions and matches ever since but some still feel that more could be done to support local football teams.

Mark Hughes, who manages Anglesey League side Mynydd Tigers, hopes that the proposed 3G pitch at Treborth will be made available to the wider community if it goes ahead.

"I appreciate that it will be biased towards students, that is their priority, but I believe they have a role to play within the community too." he explained.

"In principle however, having another 3G pitch in the area can only come as great news."

The current Treborth site hosted training camps for the Wales' Under 21's football squad when they visited Bangor for their European qualifying matches at the end of last year.

The Athletic Union hope that if the 3G pitch is given the go ahead, it can be officially opened by the end of this year.
