YNYS MÔN AM Rhun ap Iorwerth received two special gifts as he supported the "Show the Love" campaign at the Senedd on Valentine's Day.

In the Assembly, over 30 AM's act as species champions for at-risk species in Wales and Mr ap Iorwerth represents the chough.

As such, 'Craftivists' from RSPB Cymru presented him with a bespoke green heart badge and cushion with the bird embroidered on it to thank him for the work he has done so far to help protect the species.

The Show the Love event, organised by Wales Environment Link and Stop Climate Chaos Cymru, aimed to raise awareness of climate change and highlight the effects of the issue.

Mr ap Iorwerth says he was "chough-ed" to be able sponsor the event.

"I was glad to be able to be at the Senedd to raise awareness of climate change and to pledge to keep on championing the chough, which is a rare and wonderful bird." he said.

"It has particular habitat needs that are far more specialist than some of its closest relatives, and that’s why the rocky shores of western Anglesey are ideal for it.

"I’ve had the good luck of catching a sighting at South Stack, where they can be found in flocks in autumn and winter.”

Wales Environment Link (WEL) members partner AM's up with species in their constituencies that are considered, under the Environment Act, to be of key significance to sustain and improve biodiversity in Wales.

Since the Environment Act came into force in 2016, the Welsh Government must take all reasonable steps to maintain and enhance these species and the habitats they need to survive.

WEL’s Species Champions are taken on site visits to try and see their appointed animals and are given regular updates on what steps to take to ensure they are being protected.
