THE BODY of a walker found on Snowdonia mountain has been named locally as a member of a Welsh rock band.

34-year-old Iwan Huws from Rhosgadfan near Caernarfon was the drummer in the popular group, Yucatan.

Mr Huws, had headed off to climb Tryfan via the North Ridge of the mountain on Sunday afternoon.

However, a search was launched on Sunday evening as he had not returned home and concerns of his whereabouts began to grow.

In the midst of terrible weather, seven rescue teams were involved in the search for Mr Huws and his body was discovered on Monday shortly after 10am.

The body is yet to be formally identified and an investigation into the circumstances of his death is underway.

It is believed that Mr Huws, a former pupil at Ysgol Dyffryn Nantlle, was an experienced climber.

He originally became a member of Yucatan in 2010 and had rejoined the band for a second spell in 2017 after taking some time out to travel around various parts of the world.

He was described by his family as a "keen explorer", having visited several locations such as Machu Picchu and Amsterdam.

In November, he had walked the Annapurna Trek in the Himalayas.

Following Mr Huws' death, his family released a statement, which read: "We would like to thank the Mountain Rescue Team from the bottom of our hearts for their efforts to find Iwan.

"He will be remembered as a very special person, musician, explorer and a friend to everyone who knew him."

Mr Huws' band mates also paid tribute to him this week, saying they were "heartbroken" by his death.

Dilwyn Llwyd, lead singer of Yucatan, said: "My thoughts are with Elin (Iwan's partner) and his family at this very tough time.

"It's really hard to believe that he's gone. We as a band will miss him very dearly."

During 2017, Mr Huws joined Yucatan as they performed at Festival no. 6, the Eisteddfod on Anglesey, several gigs at Neuadd Ogwen and as a supporting band for The Charlatans in Cardiff in December.

A spokesperson for Festival no. 6 said: "We would like to send our sincerest thoughts to Iwan's family and friends at this difficult time."
