EX RGC fullback Rhun Williams was involved in Wales Under 20’s shock 26-25 defeat to Ireland in their World Rugby Championships opener on Tuesday.

The 18-year-old, from Caernarfon, started at 15 for Wales in their first game of the England tournament against Ireland at Manchester City Academy Stadium.

Williams, who has signed an academy deal with the Cardiff Blues, was part of the Under 20 squad which claimed a historic first ever Welsh Grand Slam during this year's Six Nations.

Wales raced to a 17-0 lead in the first 20 minutes thanks to tries from Shaun Evans, Keelan Giles and Reuben Morgan-Williams.

But Ireland rallied and made it 17-15 before half time.

The sides traded penalties in the second half and the Irish took the lead before full-back Jordan Stockdale extended the advantage to 26-20.

Welshman Keelan Giles squeezed in a second sensational late try but Jarrod Evans’ conversion to win the match missed the mark.

Wales play Georgia Under 20 in the ext Championship round at the Academy Stadium on Saturday (KO 3.45pm).
