HOLLYWOOD A-lister Naomi Watts has agreed to become the honorary president of an Anglesey football team.

The actress will assume the role with Glantraeth FC who play in Welsh football's third tier.

The team reached out to her following local estate owner Sir George Meyrick's decision to stand down from the post.

Renowned for her roles in films like King Kong, 21 Grams and The Ring, Academy Award nominee Ms Watts lived on Anglesey for a number of years as a child. Her maternal grandparents owned a farm in Llangristiolus, not far from Glantraeth's ground in Bodorgan.

Club secretary Stan Strickland was responsible for bringing about the surprising appointment, that has captured the attention of the national media.

"It was a simple case of f you don't ask, you don't get," said Mr Strickland.

"George stoood down in the summer. With a president you want someone with local connections who is relatively high profile. I knew Naomi had local connections and so I found her manager's details and emailed him.

"I head nothing, so last week I sent a bit of a cheeky email asking for a courtesy response. Yesterday morning I turned my iPad on and had an email from Naomi's manager saying she'd agreed to take on the role."

Mr Strickland said he was expecting to receive quotes from Ms Watts later on Wednesday afternoon. The actress' name will now appear on club letter heads and she will receive regular updates on the team's fortunes.

Glantraeth FC are currently second in the Lock Stock Welsh Alliance, nine points behind local rival Llangefni Town but have three games in hand.
