MANY of Ynys Môn’s athletes have arrived in Jersey ahead of the 2015 Island Games. 

A 151-strong travelling contingent of the island’s competitors, coaches and officials are making the journey to the Channel Island by air and by sea in time for Saturday’s opening ceremony. 

The team will also be supported by a group of four supporters from Mersea Island in Essex, who have adopted Môn as their island of choice for the week long event. 

Team general manager Emma Rogers said: "The final preparations are now coming together, we had a team barbecue on Sunday where all the sports got together, which was really nice.” 

The Anglesey flag bearer, shooter Tony White and watercarrier, footballer Anna Roberts, took part in the symbolic water collection ceremony at St Eilian’s well in Llaneilian last week. 

The water collected will be poured into a fountain in Jersey along with water from the 23 other competing islands. 

The sports that the island will compete in are: Archery, athletics, badminton, cycling (road and mountain), football, sailing, shooting, swimming, triathlon and tennis. 

Emma Rogers added: “We are bringing teams in sports that haven’t competed before or haven’t competed for a long time. 

“Although the overall participation isn’t the highest we’ve ever had, the Ynys Môn representation is growing in other aspects. 

“We’re hoping for a few medals. It’s the individual sports that have set targets, so they will all be targeting a certain amount of medals. 

“We’ve been fortunate to get funding from the Anglesey Charitable Trust, and although it’s not paying for any of our costs in Jersey, it will help us build on this and hopefully get more and more participation in the sports in future.”
