A NUMBER of athletes from Anglesey and Gwynedd will take part in this year’s Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

Holyhead Olympian Gareth Evans will be hoping to get among the medals when he competes in the 69kg weightlifting.

Backed by Holyhead Weightlifting Club coach and former Commonwealth gold medalist Ray Williams, he stakes his claim for a medal on Saturday, July 26 at the Clyde Auditorium.

Ysgol Syr Hugh Owen will be also be well represented at this year’s games with a trio of former pupils taking part in different sports.

21 year-old Iolo Evans, formerly of RGC 1404 but who now plies his trade for Carmarthen Quins, will represent Wales in the rugby sevens competition, which also gets underway on Saturday, July 26.

Swim Gwynedd squad member Mari Davies, from Caernarfon, will be representing Wales in the pool.

The teenager goes in the 4x100m freestyle relay heats today (Thursday) at around 1pm, and should her team qualify for the final, they will be vying for a medal this evening at 9.08pm.

Another former Syr Hugh pupil to take feature will be hammer thrower Osian Jones.

The 21-year old, who represents Liverpool Harriers, was selected to represent his country after claiming second place this year in the Welsh Championships with a throw of 63.49m.

Qualifying for the hammer takes place from 11.45am on Monday, July 28, at the Hampden Park, with medals being decided on Tuesday evening, July 29.
