AN Anglesey weightlifter representing Wales at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow suffered a broken nose after he was headbutted by another athlete competing at the games.

Australian weightlifter Francois Etoundi, aged 29, admitted an assault to injury charge following an altercation with Wales international lifter Gareth Evans, at around 5.30am on Wednesday in the athletes village.

Mr Evans suffered a broken nose in the assault.

After being arrested and detained, Mr Etoundi - who three days previously had won a bronze medal in the 77kg category - appeared at Glasgow Sheriff Court on Thursday.

Mr Etoundi pleaded guilty to the assault and was ordered by Sheriff Andrew Cubie to pay Mr Evans £400 in compensation.

Mr Evans finished fifth for Wales in the 62kg category on Friday, July 25.
