FIREFIGHTERS across North Wales will go on strike twice over the next two weeks.

Fire Brigades Union members throughout the region will take industrial action on Thursday, June 12 from 9am and on Saturday, June 21 from 10 am to 5pm, prompting warning for residents in the area to take extra care.

A North Wales Fire and Rescue service spokesman said the number of staff expected to strike is high, and will result in a reduction in the resources available.

Chief officer Simon Smith said: “The call for people to be extra vigilant and to think more carefully about the situations they may be putting themselves into is therefore a very serious one.

“Regrettably it is likely that during the strike period we won’t be able to respond as we normally would – prevention is best, so we are asking everyone to take these simple steps to ensure their safety and those of loved ones.”

The first strike, on Thursday, will coincide with the beginning of the football World Cup.

Mr Smith added: “It will be at a time when the risk to people’s safety will also be more significant as they are likely to be out socialising or at home entertaining family and friends – which means attention to fire safety in and around the home, as well as road safety, is of even more importance.”

The fire service has reminded residents to ensure they have a working smoke alarm, not to mix drinking and cooking and ensure smoking materials are extinguished.
