A CONSULTATION on the reactor design proposed for Wylfa Newydd is underway.

Horizon Nuclear Power welcomed the UK government’s consultation on the Nuclear Industry Association’s Regulatory Justification application for the UK Advanced Boiling Water Reactor (UK ABWR).

Alan Raymant, Horizon’s chief operating officer, said: “The consultation on the Regulatory Justification application of the reactor is an important milestone in our plans to develop power stations at Wylfa and Oldbury. We’re very pleased to see good progress being made.”

The three month consultation will allow stakeholders to comment on the application before Ed Davey, Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change, issues a draft decision.

The Regulatory Justification process is a legal requirement for new nuclear technology and is designed to ensure that the benefits to society of the UK ABWR outweigh any potential radiological health detriments.

Horizon Nuclear Power estimates that the proposed plan would create 6,000 jobs during construction and 1,000 permanent posts.
