ORGANISERS were bowled over by the success of a charity event in Caernarfon.
Children’s cancer charity Gafael Llaw aimed to raised £10,000 with the cricket-themed Howzat Co fun day at Caernarfon Rugby Club, but the grand total reached £17,000.
Iwan Trefor Jones, Gafael Llaw chairman, said: “As an organising committee we are absolutely delighted that our first ever event has raised a sum which far exceeds the target we had set ourselves and attracted over 1,000 people who came along on the day to support these fantastic causes and to enjoy a great family fun day out.”
Comedian Tudur Owen attended the event, which included a cricket tournament between teams from 10 of the region’s businesses.
Cofi Roc were the winners, and received their trophy from Gwynedd councillor Huw Edwards.
Iwan added: “We are extremely grateful to everyone who supported the event and in particular to local employers, sponsors Welcome Furniture and Travis Perkins, the Caernarfon branch of Santander for their generous donation and everyone who donated items to the evening auction which in itself raised over £5,000.”
Iwan said that the charity planned to hold a series of fundraising event over the next three years.
He added: “As an organising committee, the success of this first event has made us more determined than ever to continue and to intensify our efforts to raise more money to support children and young people from the area who are suffering from cancer.”
Proceeds will be donated to Ward Dewi at Ysbyty Gwynedd, the Clic Sargent charity and Alder Hey Children’s Hospital.
