DEINIOLEN residents are calling for the closure of a homeless shelter.

A public meeting will be held at Capel Ebenezer at 7pm on Wednesday, February 13 to discuss the shelter’s future after a man was arrested in connection with an incident in the village on Sunday.

Gwynedd councillor Elfed Wyn Williams said 450 people had signed a petition to close the centre.

North Wales Police confirmed that a man had been arrested and charged with two counts of common assault, one count of actual bodily harm and criminal damage in connection with an incident on the Rhyd Fadog estate.

Arwel Owen, senior housing manager for Gwynedd Council, said: “We are aware that some local residents have raised concerns about the council’s homeless hostel in Deiniolen following a recent incident in the village which is currently in the hands of North Wales Police.

“We have contacted the local councillor regarding this matter and explained to him that we would be very happy to meet with him and other community representatives to discuss the issue further.”
