THE news at Welsh Country Foods in Gaerwen that Vion has served its 90 days closure notice dominates events.

There has been great uncertainty since Vion announced it is to withdraw from the UK and the decision by ASDA to terminate its contract with Vion compounds the problem at Gaerwen.

I raised this matter and potential job losses at Welsh questions and requested a meeting with the Secretary of State.

He agreed and I shall be calling on him to contact ASDA to reconsider its decision and for the UK government to work with others to limit the impact on jobs and the island’s economy.

To me people and jobs are the key issue - individuals, families and the community will be devastated if closure did go ahead.

Welsh Country Foods already shed 200 jobs in 2010, and there has been little investment in the plant despite the Welsh Government's offer of financial support.

We need a commitment from both Vion and ASDA and a business case that puts the site on a proper footing.

In the constituency I met local councils, our AM, and unions. I also met community groups, and companies.

In addition I took part in the S4C Pawb a'i Farn programme live from Anglesey. It is good to get local debates on national TV.
