BANGOR community leaders have called for an improvement to the city’s road system before a controversial 245-home development is passed.
Plans submitted by housing developer Redrow to to build 245 homes in Penrhosgarnedd have already been greeted with opposition by local residents, and now city councillors are running their rule over the development.
They believe that traffic leading along Penrhos Road is at a “critical point”, and developers must adhere to the original planning guidance by Gwynedd Council, which states that infastructure, such as roads and other local ammenities, must be upgraded to accommodate the additional residents.
City clerk Gwyn Hughes said: “It’s not on our patch, but it definitely has an effect on our patch because it increases traffic to Penrhos Road, which has too many cars. It could be quite dangerous to children going to school on the school run, and to the hospital.
“Until a road is put in, we’re not in favour. While we don’t object to the houses being built there, we’d like to see the infastructure improved accordingly.”
Councillor Dewi Llywelyn said: “The land has been earmarked for development, but the road is always gridlocked as it is.
"I propose an independent traffic survey, someone completely indepedent, to observe the traffic and conduct a survey. “
Cllr Huw Edward Williams said: “The traffic is at a critical point, and the survey should be conducted to mend the situation.”
Keith Marshall said: “I think a much more comprehensive traffic development needs to be put in place, to link the road to the A55.
“I think we need direct access from the A55, that would make it possible to accommodate the extra traffic that will be generated.”
Eddie Dogan said: “The big trouble is the road coming from the Faenol way. They should go there and see the amount of blockage that has been on the road there.”
Councillors voted to accpet the housing plans on the condition of improvements to the city’s roads, and will now be put before Gwynedd Council Planning Committee on Friday February 4 2013, subject to change.
