RGC 1404 served up the perfect appetiser for the international rugby double-header at Eirias Park on Saturday after hammering Penallta 40-5.

RGC, who lined up for their second home game before the Autumns Series clashes between USA and Tonga and Canada versus Russia, outclassed their visitors in a stunning five-try first half, and coach Chris Horsman said his side’s attitude at full-time, having been disapointed to not stretch their lead, showed how far they had progressed in a short space of time.

“I was happy with the first half and to come in at half time with 5 tries, but we can be slightly disappointed with our 2nd half. The dressing room was a bit like a morgue after the game, and that shows how far we have come as we have won the match.

“One of the things that was thrown at us at the start if the season was the fact we wouldn’t be able to compete physically and today we dominated the scrum and line out. It’s all about putting the polish on our performances and to be honest we should have had 70 points but we won and we look forward to the next game.

1404 made it two wins out of two at Eirias, with Afon Bagshaw setting the ball rolling with the opening try on 15 minutse, with Mitch McGahan converting.

Penallta struck back straight from the restart with their only score of the game, but prop Tom Hughes showed a turn of pace to collect his kick to the line for another try.

The RGC scrum was also looking impressive and from a scrum the next try came, as the ball was played wide to Carwyn Ap Myrddin who dived over in the corner. McGahan converted his third kick.

Skipper Kelvin Davies started the next try, setting Iolo Evans free to run 40 yards over the line, and a crossfield punt from McGahan found Ap Myrddin, who had to simply place down the fifth.

The second half was a scrappy affair with few chances for either side, though Kelvin Davies broke after a period of pressure and set up Carwyn Ap Myrddin, who kept his feet the correct side of the touchline to dance over for a hat trick of tries.
