CONTROVERSIAL plans to introduce Marine Conservation Zones (MCZ) off Anglesey could mean a bleak future for the Island.
That was the view of Beaumaris mayor cllr Jason Zalot at a public meeting on Monday, adding that businesses on the Island would suffer due to dwindling visitor numbers.
He said: “It is a very bleak and depressing future, looking at a Marine Conservation Zone through the looking glass, and one I hope and pray will never occur here, or in any other part of Wales.”
Around 150 people packed into the centre to give hear speakers give their views on proposals for MCZs off Puffin Island and Friars Bay.
Four more zones are proposed for the Llyn Peninsula.
The Welsh Government’s initial consultation into 10 potential sites around the country ends on Tuesday, July 31.
A final decision is expected in 2014.
Cllr Zalot, who operates a charter fishing business, added that the areas eco-systems were already protected.
He said: “To completely ban all forms of fishing, anchoring, walking on beaches etc will sterilise a vibrant and balanced eco-system.
“The system works – why break it?”
Welsh Government respresentative Julia Williams was also asked why the consultation was focused on ecological issues, given the government’s legal duty to sustainable development.
Beaumaris Town Council resolved on Tuesday to ask Welsh Government Minister John Griffiths, who leads on environment and sustainable development, to visit the town.
The council will also draft a response to the consultation, which will be displayed in the town for people to sign.
Cllr Alistair Grant said there had been very little consultation with residents and traders.
He said: “I would like to appeal to Chronicle readers to put their views in writing to the Welsh Assembly, or if they drop them into the town clerk.”
