Christian group launches Beaumaris Mardi Gras protest

A CHRISTIAN group has launched a campaign against the North Wales Mardi Gras.

Christian Voice distributed leaflets through letter boxes and in the High Street in protest against the event, which is scheduled for Beaumaris Leisure Centre on Saturday, April 28.

Spokesman Charles Mortlock said that the group was not anti-gay people, but was against promoting homosexuality.

He said: “We know that there are worse things going on in society, but we don’t think they should be celebrated.

“We don’t believe that this lifestyle should be promoted in a public space.

Event organiser Alan Jones explained that there would not be a parade through the town, and added that it was not specifically a gay, lesbian and transgender event.

He added: “The Mardi Gras is open for everybody in the community to attend, irrespective of religion, race or sexual orientation.

“It is regrettable that Christian Voice are misrepresenting our intentions of building bridges within the community.

Mr Jones added that the group was welcome to attend, provided they behaved “in the appropriate manner.”

Mr Mortlock was also opposed to the Mardi Gras being held at the leisure centre.

An Anglesey County Council spokesperson said: "The Equality Act 2010 is about ensuring a fair deal for everyone and focuses on ending discrimination, advancing equality of opportunity and fostering good relations between different individuals and communities.

“The county council is committed to adhering to these principles."
Entry to the Mardi Gras is £5 on the door.

The leaflet said that the event's purpose was to 'bully the rest of us in to accepting the gay acitivist agenda.' Yet posting leaflets through the doors of every Beaumaris resident (including several single and sometimes vulnerable homosexual residents) is not 'bullying' 'the rest of us' into accepting the Christian Voice's agenda to demonise homosesxuals? I'm embarrassed that Christian Voice was able to get away with this in Beaumaris.

Christian Voice: How dare you push this rubbish into our homes? Distributing literature that spreads bigotry, intolerance and hatred is the vile act of small-minded, intellectually stunted people. I'm ashamed to live in a town where this bigotry took place. Keep your hate away from Beaumaris, Christian Voice. You are as vile as the EDL and the BNP and your hatred is not welcome here.

Only two comments in opposition to these sick leaflets? This is not the Beaumaris I thought I knew. Surely we are a more educated and cosmopolitan village than this? Surely we are more accepting than this? Or are we really as thick and parochial as some of our neighbours in the UK would believe us to be? Where is your outrage, Beaumaris?

Religious observance is declining. In my opinion, the world is a happier place without the sectarianism generated and encouraged by organised religion. So, it is particularly saddening that groups like Christian Voice are still around spreading their vile, divisive messages. One can only hope that they will increasingly be viewed as 'the lunatic fringe' and will soon fade into obscurity along with all other inciters of hatred.

christian voice should be ashamed of themselves. "Do unto thy neighbour as you would like done unto you" - Im sure CV would not appreciate a protest against them practicing their religion every sunday. Everybody should be entitled to their own opinions, but personally I think CV should keep it to themselves. There is no need to share this disgusting view. There is nothing wrong with homosexuality. Surely we could all do with a little less hatred and a little more love in the world?

I feel that everybody should be able to print what they like in relation to there views no matter how bad people may feel about the points raised, and that goes for the views of CV. Do the people of Beaumaris want to be viewed in the same light as the Nazis when they burnt books, let people have there say on both sides of the arguement thats called democracy folks.
